NHK for Free

The other day I noticed that NHK was being offered as a free preview on my TV package. Nostalgic joy rose up through my very soul. Checking out the daily schedule, I noticed that the Spring Sumo tournament was also on. Fortuitous indeed. There are some other programs I will check out, but Sumo is the icing on the cake.

I was introduced to Sumo by my first roommate in Japan. Every night we would watch the highlights on a program called Sumo Digest. The sound of the drums and the clapping blocks of wood were a moment of jubilation. In those days, TV start times were a little irregular, but we hung on knowing it would eventually start. I remember that my roommate didn’t know the names of the sumo wrestlers and gave them names like Al Delveccio (from Happy Days) and Big Salt Thrower.

I have never lost my love for it, and it is obvious why I call it Today’s Perfect Moment.
