The Best Laid Plans….

My long time friend needs some new shoes

So after writing about my plans and optimism, and doing some grocery shopping, I realized that the day was too good to waste and I decided to go out for a bike ride.

I didn’t want to get all kitted up and so I decided to take my mountain bike out of the garage and tool around on it.  I had used it just before I went to Cambodia to test the legs on that cold winter day that hadn’t snowed.

Sadly, I noticed that the front tire was flat.  I started to pump it up, but then realized that the tires were not gripping the inside of the wheels very well.  It seems that the cold winter weather and sudden spring did a number on the tires.  I started to deflate the tube (which I could see bulging out of the wheel area) and it popped with a rather loud bang.  I have never had that happen before.

a creek I came across in my ride that became a walk

My idea of a spring discovery ride turned into a walk.  The scenery was nice, but ….I sure would have loved to ride around a bit.  I now have to buy a new tire and tube for the mountain bike if I want to tool around on it.  If I don’t, it will just rot away in the garage and possibly never see the light of day again.  And that wouldn’t be fair.

  1. I think I’d rather like to have a bicycle … My husband when he was 17 cycled from the south of France to the north over a period of three weeks, whilst camping at little random places along the way. Would you think it’s really odd if I said that I’d really like to do that next year during the spring, but taking 4 or 5 weeks as I’m slower … um, and I’m 50 next year …

Well, let’s take these things reverse order. 50 is not too old to be on a bicycle. I am 48, so age is not an issue. There are many older people in my club and they seem to do just fine. Many are faster than me.
On my first cycling trip, I was one of the younger people. Also, you could think about an electric bike that would help with the hills.
If you have more time, take more time. I have long given up camping and that is probably why I took those Exodus tours. They had nice hotels waiting for us.
A friend of mine saw a camper that you could pull along behind your bike, but which would be a little more comfortable to sleep in. It’s worth investigating.
      Whatever you decide, just enjoy.

      • Thank you so much … I’m liking the idea of the camper. I’ve written a list of everything I’ll need so now I just need to work out when. I reckon I’ll really enjoy it and it would be the most wonderful challenge! Thanks. Katie

    • Biking France would be fantastic! I have watched le Tour most years and enjoy the countryside.. some day maybe I will win the lottery. Also, 50 is not too old, just depends on your health, I’m a testament to that having ridden a long way the last two years. Au revoir et bon voyage!

I know you’ll look after that bike.

Hahah my boyfriend calls the tires on our car “shoes” too! Hope you get that new tire soon!!!

  4. Darn! I was looking forward to reading about your ride! Always good to be prepared, but sometimes were not. Try again today!
