Thoughts on Sunday’s Spectacle

Super Bowl Sunday

Someone asked me on Friday what I thought about moving the Super Bowl to Saturday. Apparently, somewhere, someone took a poll and got a strong response to moving the game.

The way I see it, there are certainly some advantages. More people would likely whoop it up and that would mean more alcohol and food sales.  Super Bowl parties could be even bigger, or at least better attended.  Then people could get some sleep and potentially sleep off some hangovers.

All sound logical. I wonder what the drawbacks are?

Super Bowl Sunday is a name that rings in your ears. It would take a fair amount of marking savvy to get people to think Super Bowl Saturday.

Saturday night is for watching hockey. Hockey Night in Canada might lose a few viewers here in Canada.

……. can’t think of any more.

The Game Itself

So, my thoughts on the big game. Nice to see the underdog win.  I wonder what happened to all the normal penalty calls?  Maybe the referee whistles were defective.  I am sure some people are going to be confused about what is and what is not a touchdown.  I am less bothered by it.  This was the first year I got to watch the “Super Bowl Commercials.”  Not impressed.  Back to watching a Canadian station next year.

The Perfect Moment

If you thinking that Yesterday’s Perfect Moment revolves around the game, you’d be right. There are lots of things I could choose.  Spending time with my Dad, though we talked more about our family tree than the game, is a good one.  Though, we already had our father son bonding time over the Grey Cup, which is a much more important game in my family.  The game itself…..no.

The Perfect Moment was the fact that I didn’t have to wake up early for work today, and so I could watch the game with complete contentment. I wasn’t tired and I knew I wouldn’t be today.

One Response to Thoughts on Sunday’s Spectacle

  1. John says:

Strangely this was the first Super Bowl I have not watched in twenty years. From the 1990s and thanks to satellite TV, it has been possible to watch the game live. It is perfect Americana. In fact we can watch about three live games every Sunday.
Of course watching the game “live” means starting at 11pm or so and going to bed after the third quarter. Usually it does not matter but last year it did.
As a sport, it is not nearly as good as soccer or rugby. The fact that a 15 minute quarter can last a week, with the adverts and the stopping of the clock every four seconds is irritating.
Not sure why I was so disinterested this year especially as the Eagles were the team that we adopted in the 1990s on the basis that my wife had an uncle in Philly. I think it might be that my 60 year love affair with USA is over. Americana seems…sinister these days.
