Amid all the controversy of celebrating colonialism, though the birthday for that would be much more than 150 years, I feel that I need to write something about this day. I don’t really need to commemorate anything. Instead of celebrating its history, which has a lot of good things going for it, I would like to reflect on it today.
Here are my thoughts in point form:
It’s a pretty peaceful and friendly place.
It’s got some freedom.
It’s got its own humble identity, regardless of what anyone tells you.
It celebrates things, from quirky to quiet, from funny to serious, that others don’t quiet get.
It exports its talented people, and proudly smiles when they do good in other countries.
Its conservative rules on alcohol and gun control are in fantastic juxtaposition to its rules on diversity and acceptance.
It makes some damn fine beer and rye.
Its songs reflect rather than rile.
It cheers whenever there is a question about itself on Jeopardy (and chuckles when the contestants don’t know the answer).
Three coasts and a lot of land.
The home of Hawaiian pizza (we will accept your thanks and scorn with equal pleasure).
Milk in bags
The country that abandoned the penny.
A place where people bicker and stand up for one another like family.
It is the place I call home.
Happy 150th Birthday Canada.
What a beautiful tribute to your home, Anthony! You’ve listed so many of the reasons I admire your country — and a few new ones, too.
Thank you
I liked this post. Good reasons to call this place home.
