September 1, 2014: Dad, TV, and Football

Today’s Perfect Moment is complicated.  Perhaps complicated is not the right word.  Confused?  Bittersweet?  I would choose that one, but I always look at that word as better suited to something more romantic.  (And by romantic you need to watch the scene in Casablanca where the Major tells Rich why he thinks he is in Casablanca).

Maybe if I stumble through this until the end, the right word will appear.

Between my father and I, there exist many traditions.  These include a wide variety of things, from comedy routines to music to board games.  Today’s Perfect Moment comes in the form of sports.

In isn’t because my father has the better TV (though he does by an embarrassingly huge margin), but because it is always better to watch sports with family or friends that we get together for the big (and sometimes small) games.  This could be the Grey Cup, The Vanier Cup, the Stanley Cup (Even the Super bowl) or today, the Labour Day Classic between the unloved Hamilton Tiger Cats and the Toronto Argonauts.  I should note that my father is a master channel flipper so we were able to watch the golf as well.

The Argos lost the game, and deservedly so.  At times it seemed as if neither team had any desire to win it.  Nonetheless, it was great to spend time with my Dad.  We cheered, we criticized, we debated, we quizzed, and we held our breath in anticipation.  Would it have been better if our team had won?  Frankly, I don’t think it would have made any difference.
