July 27, 2014: Lightning

Mother Nature is awesome.  When I say that, I don’t want you to confuse what I mean by awesome.  I don’t mean cool, radical, sick, hip… or some other similar word.  I mean awesome in the old, perhaps biblical, meaning.  AWESOME.

Today’s Perfect Moment, along with the realization of the aforementioned awesomeness, was found when driving home from a nice visit with my father.  My stomach full of paternally funded fish and chips (not on my diet, but I haven’t learned good restaurant ordering yet), some decent tunes on the radio, and a trunk full of free stuff provided by my optimum card I noticed something odd.  Though we were headed towards evening, the sky seemed darker than it should.  And when I say dark, I mean ominous dark, evil portents dark, “something wicked this way comes” dark.

The day had been bright and quite warm, but suddenly it was anything but.  I heard the cashiers mumbling about a storm, but I was too busy calculating my free stuff to worry.  As I was driving, and saw the most brilliant flash of lightning, I understood, all too late, that I should have paid more attention.

I know, lightning is dangerous, but it is awesome to see.  It is incredible to see a clear lightning strike, especially since it can make all that gloom disappear for an instant.  It can brighten the darkest sky.  The sound, no pun intended, is electric and powerful.  At once I feel like a little boy again whose eyes open wide and only a soft “wow” seem to be able to get past my lips.

Though I cannot say that this perfect moment made me happy, it certainly put a lot of things in perspective.  Mother Nature is awesome…..scary, powerful, awesome.
